Re: To Competitive with Stats?

Stats only have any meaning to the person who owns them, they are the only one who knows how they were achieved. Far too much emphasis is placed on KDR which is relevant to TDM and FFA but not much else. SPM has some meaning, it shows how active you are in a match but it doesn't necessarily mean you're any good. You can get a high SPM destroying equipment, getting kills in objective games instead of playing the objective. Basically to know if someone is any good you need to put their stats into context and that can be too difficult at times. A lot of people spout their KDR thinking it makes them sound good, but they rarely tell you what mode they play, just how many kills they have, if they play solo or in a party etc. It all makes a difference.

You also need to realise not everybody is always on form, not everybody always has a good connection. Also not everybody goes into every match with the same objective; sometimes I play to win, sometimes I play for kills, sometimes I play for completing operations.

Take stats out of the game though and people would lose a lot of interest. If I play solo, only TDM, I have 20,000 kills and have a KDR over 2 then I can be pleased, so why shouldn't I have that stat to make me feel good about my performance? I only use stats for myself, to compare my performance week to week. I know what my personal goals are, and what my connection is like. There are weeks when I receive two or three clan invites, and other weeks when I get none. That to me shows just how variable my own game is, and I would be very surprised if there are many people who can legitimately claim they boss every single match.

If you want to give stats more meaning to others then you need to make them far more complex to show some of the variables I have highlighted. For example, show how many matches, in each mode I have played solo, how many in a party! show my KDR when solo, when in a party. There are hundreds of different variables you would need to show more on. I find it far simpler to just ignore other players stats altogether and only judge on what I see in a match, and even then, match by match, with a thought that they maybe playing for operations, or have a bad connection.
