I posted a link to some info about this somewhere.  MTU didn't increase his bandwidth.  That's just a coincidence.  Since you have some lag, then you might as well mess with MTU, but it's not likely to make much of a difference.  Changing your MTU will only effect your packet loss.  If you have no packet loss, then there is no point in messing with it.  You can change it all you want but it won't help you if you pull host with people from across the pond in your lobby.  It will do nothing to make their ping to you better.

I take part of this back.  If his packet loss was so atrocious it could effect his bandwidth, and then it's possible changing MTU eliminated enough packet loss to get a slightly better bandwidth.  Adjusting it properly will help eliminate packet loss which will in turn make your experience better, but again it won't help if someone with a terrible ping to the host is in the lobby.  And again if you aren't experiencing packet loss then there's no reason to mess with it.  Set it wrong and you can make your connection not work at all.  Then again if you do set it wrong then you probably know how to change it back so that's not a big deal.

Test your packet loss on pingtest.net or something.  If it's always at 0% packet loss then I wouldn't even bother.
